Daily Necessities Destination Transformation in South Cairo, NY

Every morning at the corner of Ross Ruland Road and County Route 23B, motorists converge at the South Cairo Country Store to gas up, grab a coffee, a buttered hard roll, and whatever else helps them start their day.  Customers continuously flow through leading up to another rush as folks make their way home from work.  Cars pull in, and trucks pull out, and sometimes there are some close calls and sudden stops.  All that is about to change as this destination relocates down the street to its new facility.

Sagar Purani, his brother Ankur and their families run a number of convenience-type businesses in upstate New York and the Southern Tier.  Sagar moved to Cairo as a child, went through the Cairo-Durham school system, on to college then back to work in the family business.  After years of providing good jobs for his dedicated employees, establishing loyal customer and supplier relationships, and expanding product offerings, the Purani family is building for the future on a 5 acre lot just east of the traffic light at NYS 23 and Ross Ruland Road.

Construction began in 2024 with site clearing, grading and fuel tank installation. The foundation work was started in November. By January, the steel framework of the new structure was beginning to appear, with siding, roofing and windows being installed throughout March and April.

A customer picking up his morning coffee asked Sagar how the construction is coming along. With his typical wit, Sag replied “It’s going to put this place out of business”.

The current business occupies 3 relatively small buildings on two parcels along the road (South Cairo County Store, South Cairo Deli, and South Cairo Liquor). The new facility over 5 times the retail space, and will offer essentials, food, fuel, beer, wine & liquor in one location with easy on-off access to NYS 23.

The new home for the Purani family businesses will significantly increase their ability to provide more of what customers want for more and more customers.  It is expected to be up and running in just in time for summer.
