From Local Roots to a Next-Generation Convenience Hub in South Cairo, NY

From Local Roots to a Next-Generation Convenience Hub in South Cairo, NY

Located along one of the main routes connecting the Hudson Valley to the Catskill Mountains, the new South Cairo Country Store serves both local residents and the steady flow of visitors traveling through the region.

For more than 30 years, the Purani family has been part of the South Cairo business community, operating three businesses—a convenience store, a deli, and a liquor store—each in separate locations. Now the family has taken the next step in growing that legacy, opening a new 10,000-square-foot South Cairo Country Store on a five-acre site just off NYS Route 23 that consolidates their longtime businesses and brings essentials, food, fuel, beer, wine, and liquor together in one expanded location.

The new South Cairo Country Store complex features 12 fueling stations for cars and light trucks and four diesel pumps for larger vehicles, creating a convenient stop for everyday errands and for travelers heading through the Catskills. Inside the Country Store, customers will find everyday essentials including dairy products, frozen foods, beverages, and freshly brewed coffee, along with a large beer cave and other specialty selections.

In an adjoining space, the South Cairo Liquor Store offers a wide selection of wines, spirits, and ready-to-drink beverages, with wines organized by variety and chilled selections available in front-access coolers.

For Ankur Purani, who grew up in South Cairo, the project reflects years of planning and research.

“It’s all about providing our customers with an exceptional experience,” says Purani. “My father, brother, and I visited between 50 and 60 of the top convenience centers in the region to see what was working and what wasn’t before we designed the new building and laid out the service areas.”

The South Cairo complex will continue to evolve in the months ahead. Plans include EV supercharger stations capable of fully charging vehicles in about 45 minutes, along with new food offerings from Wingman Pizza and Champ’s Chicken expected to open this summer. Outdoor seating areas and a dog park are also planned, creating a welcoming stop for both local residents and visitors traveling through Greene County.

For the Purani family, the project represents the next chapter in a business built in Greene County and continuing to grow with the community—an example of how local entrepreneurs are investing in the region’s future.
