Two decades after purchasing 12 wooded acres in Catskill, Jim Malone has transformed the property into a picturesque recording studio retreat – marking the next phase in his 30-year career in the music industry.
Little Big North is more than a space for music and audio production. Drawing inspiration from Stax in Memphis; Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama; Gold Star and Sound City in LA; Hitsville USA in Detroit; Jim created a studio that is an experience in itself – complete with nature trails, kayaks, and canoes.
As a musician himself, Jim knows that creating good music means being in the right state of mind. That’s why he designed a studio where fellow musicians can retreat, relax and record. While working on a project, musicians can stay onsite in the 4-bedroom log cabin.
In addition to music, Jim’s other passion is woodworking. The recording studio is situated in a barn that Jim had built for his sustainable furniture business, CounterEvolution. The interior features old growth heart pine beams from a country club in Deal, NJ; California redwood rescued from water tanks in Hopewell, VA; and reclaimed bowling lanes from all over the country.
The barn, which also serves as a performance venue, has running water, an outdoor shower, a deck, a woodstove, and radiant heat.
Little Big North offers high quality recording, mixing and editing, audio postproduction, producing and mastering services. Jim can also produce podcasts, audio books and original music for clients’ projects. Clients have the ability to collaborate with other producers/studios across the country in real time using Source Connect, an online platform. The facilities are also available for film production, music video and photo shoots.
