With over 20 years of experience in the cycling industry, local siblings Lee Herchenroder and Mountain Laurel wanted to create an inclusive bicycle shop that welcomes cyclists of all ages, abilities and disciplines. In May 2023, the Catskill Bicycle Supply Co. was born.
Located on Main Street Catskill, the Catskill Bicycle Supply Co. has everything from kids’ bikes to high-end road, mountain and e-bikes. Local siblings Lee Herchenroder and Mountain Laurel opened the shop in May 2023, fueled by their love of cycling and their childhood roots in the Catskills.
“We’re a little shop but we offer a lot,” Lee Herchenroder said. “We offer everything from in new sales from kids bikes all the way up through super high-end road bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes and everything in between.”
Lee and Mountain were able to increase their inventory recently with the help of a $25,000 MULTI Grant from Greene County Economic Development Corporation.
In addition to bicycle sales, the shop also offers rentals, bike maintenance workshops, a variety of services, and organized group rides.
With over 120+ miles of mountain biking trails in Greene County, many of the shop’s customers are mountain bikers.
“We offer beginner-level mountain bikes at reasonable price point, as well as really high-end mountain bike services such as suspension rebuilding and custom fit,” Lee said.
For some Catskill and Athens residents, bikes are more than just recreation – they are a form of transportation. Catskill Bicycle Supply Co. helps ensure these bikes are tuned up and ready to go.
From commuters to mountain bikers to individuals looking to get into biking for the first time, the shop serves everyone, Lee said.
“I think that many people can be intimidated by walking into a bike shop, whether they don’t know the vernacular or whether they’re self-conscious about their riding ability or their equipment,” Lee said. “We are not that type of shop. We are welcoming to every single person who walks in the door, and we like to make sure that we meet everyone’s needs the best we can.”
In the future, Lee and Mountain plan to expand their service department and fit services. Depending on sales this coming season, they may be in the market for a new or additional location, Lee added.
