CATSKILL — Thomas Cole and Frederic Church, the luminaries of the Hudson River School of Art, are about to meet again — this time through the vision of abstract artists.
Cedar Grove will host the opening of its 2015 exhibition entitled “River Crossings,” which begins May 3, and will be presented in partnership with Olana, the historic home of Frederic Church — Cole’s student and fellow Hudson River School landscape painter.
For the first time since Cole and Church were painting their famous landscapes and displaying them in their homes, contemporary art will hang and be installed directly into the property and landscapes of both historic sites. The exhibition features 30 contemporary artists whose work is directly influenced by Cole or Church.
The staff at Cedar Grove held its second of four monthly Sunday Salons leading up to May. In January, the salon featured speaker Franklin Vagnone, the author of the up-and-coming book “The Anarchist Guide to Historic House Museums” to introduce the idea of incorporating contemporary art into historic sites such as Cedar Grove and Olana.
This month’s salon featured painter Thomas Nozkowski — one of the contemporary artists whose work will be featured in “River Crossings.”
“The Sunday Salons are just so much fun,” Cedar Grove collection and exhibition manager Kate Menconeri said. “During the off-season, we want to provide something to keep everyone stimulated, sharing with other people who share our passion of art and learn something new.”
