Jim Miltenberger and Charley McGuffog looked at the growing number of people coming to the mountaintop town of Windham, NY and saw an opportunity. Their newly constructed Hickory Hill Market is designed to be an up-scale and welcoming convenience destination for both visitors and residents – selling the essentials needed for the day, the weekend, or year-round living.
As you approach Windham heading west on NYS Route 23, Hickory Hill Market definitely catches your eye. The drive up to this Catskill Mountain town features spectacular views and a steady ascent into the Catskill Park. Windham Mountain comes into view on the left and the sign for the market draws you in on the right.
This seems precisely what Jim and Charlie were thinking.
While there are plenty of places to shop in and around the community, there’s no supermarket. Residents drive to Prattsville or Tannersville for groceries, or head down the mountain to Cairo, Catskill or Greenville to shop at Hannaford, Walmart, Price Chopper or Tops.
As Windham has developed into a four-season destination, augmenting world class skiing and winter sports with hiking and mountain biking on a growing number of trails and runs, visitors mostly ‘provisioned-up’ before they arrived in town, mainly due to the wider product selection offered at valley retailers.
Hickory Hill Market is changing all that.
The minute you walk into the place, it becomes clear that this is not just another convenience store. Sure they have all the usual items, but the quality and variety of the fare is at an entirely higher level than one would expect. There’s a huge walk-in beverage cooler that not only features national brand favorites, but touts a great selection of micro brews in bottles and cans with growler taps planned for the near future!
Fresh vegetables and meats wait across the aisle from frozen treats, a full-service deli and artisan pizzeria flank the adjacent wall. Specialty cheeses, crackers, and fruits round out the selection and you can even enjoy your purchase with friends in the spacious table seating area.
Hickory Hill Market takes convenience shopping to a whole new level.
Stopping for gas or coffee may bring you in the first time, but the quality, variety, and welcoming service will keep both visitors and locals coming back.
